Kakinada is a coastal city in Andhra Pradesh's East Godavari region, sitting where the Bay of Bengal meets the Godavari delta. Once overshadowed by the nearby port of Coringa, Kakinada grew rapidly through the 19th century after cyclones and silting redirected maritime trade its way — by the 1890s it had become one of the most populous and important port cities in the Andhra region, a status it held well into the 20th century.

Today the city is anchored by Kakinada Port, sheltered by Hope Island's natural breakwater and home to both an anchorage port and a deep-water port — the second-largest deep-water port in Andhra Pradesh. That maritime backbone, combined with fertilizer, edible oil, natural gas and petrochemical industries tied to the Krishna–Godavari basin, has made Kakinada a genuine industrial and commercial hub, while its well-planned streets and calm, low-key character have earned it the nickname "Pensioners' Paradise."
